A new academic journey is always filled with excitement, expectations and countless possibilities. To warmly welcome the newly admitted B.Sc. I Year students, the Department of Statistics organized a memorable Welcome Function on 6th August 2026 at 10.00 a.m. onwards in the Department of Statistics.

The programme was organized with the aim of helping new students feel comfortable in their new academic environment, become familiar with the Department and faculty members, and begin their college journey with confidence and enthusiasm.

A Warm Beginning to a New Journey

The programme was presided over by Mr. Vijay Ramesh Suryawanshi, Head of the Department of Statistics. In his presidential address, he extended a warm welcome to the newly admitted students and encouraged them to approach their college life with discipline, curiosity and a positive attitude.

The students were introduced to the academic environment of the Department and were encouraged to actively participate in classroom learning, practical activities, departmental programmes and other opportunities available during their undergraduate journey.

An Inspiring Introductory Lecture

The introductory lecture was delivered by Mr. Rohit Chandrakant Sadalage. His interaction with the students provided an encouraging start to their academic journey. He highlighted the importance of learning Statistics not merely as a subject, but as a powerful tool for understanding data, making informed decisions and solving real-life problems.

The session helped students understand the opportunities associated with Statistics and motivated them to develop interest in analytical thinking and practical learning.

Words of Encouragement from the Faculty

Miss. Namrata Narayan Sawant shared her thoughts through the Teacher's Manogat. Her message focused on the importance of regular study, active participation, self-confidence and maintaining a positive relationship with teachers and classmates.

Her encouraging words created a friendly atmosphere and helped the new students feel more connected with the Department.

A Meaningful Conclusion

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mrs. Kavita Kirankumar Koli. She expressed gratitude to the President, faculty members and students for their valuable contribution to the successful organization of the Welcome Function.

Creating a Sense of Belonging

The Welcome Function was more than just a formal introduction. It was an opportunity to build a strong connection between the newly admitted students and the Department of Statistics. The programme created a welcoming, supportive and motivating atmosphere in which students could begin their undergraduate journey with confidence.

From Classroom Concepts to Real-World Applications

Learning Statistics becomes truly meaningful when students get an opportunity to see how statistical concepts operate in the real world. With this vision, the Department of Statistics, Dattajirao Kadam Arts, Science & Commerce College, Ichalkaranji, organized a two-day Study Tour to Satara District on 16 and 17 February 2026 for students of B.Sc. II and B.Sc. III Statistics. The primary objective of the tour was to provide students with practical knowledge and a better understanding of the applications of Statistics beyond the classroom.
The tour was planned as an experiential learning activity through which students could connect theoretical concepts such as Sampling Techniques, Time Series Analysis, Regression Analysis, data collection and Vital Statistics with practical situations.

A Journey of Academic Exploration

The study tour commenced with the departure of the group on 16 February 2026 and concluded on 17 February 2026. The approved tour itinerary included travel through Ichalkaranji, Karad, Satara and Vasota Fort, before returning to Ichalkaranji.
The tour included 15 students—14 female and 1 male—and accompanying faculty members, providing students with an opportunity to learn collectively while experiencing statistical applications in different real-world contexts.

Why a Study Tour in Statistics?

Statistics is deeply connected with almost every sector of society. Government departments, industries, agriculture, environmental organizations, meteorological systems and administrative institutions all depend on the systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of data.

The Department designed the study tour with the objective of helping students understand how raw data is collected, processed, analyzed and transformed into useful information for decision-making. During the tour, students were exposed to practical examples of data collection, statistical modelling and record management.

This helped students understand that the concepts studied in classrooms are not merely theoretical formulas but are tools used to understand and solve real-world problems.

Exploring Data Collection and Sampling

One of the important learning components of the tour was the observation of data collection and survey processes.

Students were introduced to the practical importance of conducting surveys systematically and understanding the challenges associated with data collection. They observed how proper procedures are necessary to obtain reliable information and how non-sampling errors can affect the quality of statistical conclusions.

This provided students with a practical perspective on concepts that they encounter while studying Sampling Techniques.

Understanding Regression in Renewable Energy

An especially significant learning experience was the observation of the application of Regression Models in wind energy.

Students learned how statistical modelling can be used to study the relationship between variables and make predictions. In the context of wind energy, the tour demonstrated how wind velocity can be used to predict power output through regression models.

This real-world example helped students appreciate the importance of Statistics in modern renewable-energy applications and demonstrated how statistical models can contribute to technological and environmental decision-making.

Connecting Statistics with Vital Statistics

The study tour also helped students understand the importance of maintaining administrative records and the role of Vital Statistics.

Students observed how records are maintained at the administrative level, giving them a practical understanding of how statistical information relating to population and other vital events is systematically recorded and maintained.

Such exposure enabled students to connect classroom discussions on official statistics with actual administrative practices.

Visitor Volume Analysis: Statistics in Tourism

The natural and tourism-related context of Vasota also offered an interesting statistical application.

The activity report identifies visitor volume analysis as an important potential statistical application. Historical information indicates that Vasota attracts approximately 1,000–2,000 visitors per month. Students can use such data to study visitor patterns, identify peak periods and calculate measures such as the mean, median and mode across different seasons.

This example demonstrates how Statistics can support tourism planning and help organizations understand patterns in visitor behaviour.

Learning by Observation

The greatest strength of the study tour was the opportunity for students to observe statistical applications in context.

Instead of studying concepts only through textbooks, students were able to visualize how data is generated, recorded and used in different areas. Such experiential learning makes statistical concepts more concrete and helps students understand their practical relevance.

The department's report highlights that the tour was designed specifically to bridge the gap between theoretical classroom concepts and real-world statistical applications.

Safety, Responsibility and Academic Discipline

The tour was organized with appropriate academic and safety considerations. The approved tour documentation records the participation of accompanying faculty members and confirms the required student and faculty undertakings and approval procedures.
The documentation also records first-aid preparedness among the accompanying faculty, emphasizing that student safety and responsible participation were integral parts of the tour planning.

Building Skills Beyond Statistics

Although the primary purpose of the tour was academic, the experience also contributed to the development of several transferable skills.

Students had opportunities to develop:

  • Observation skills through field-based learning.

  • Analytical thinking through identification of statistical applications.

  • Problem-solving skills through real-world situations.

  • Teamwork and cooperation through group participation.

  • Communication skills through interaction and discussion.

  • Data-oriented thinking by observing real data collection and management.

A Memorable Academic Experience

The two-day study tour created a valuable learning environment in which students could experience Statistics in a broader social, industrial, environmental and administrative context.

The departmental report concludes that the tour enabled students to move beyond the textbook and visualize the impact of Statistics on governance, industry and the environment. It also notes that such excursions can strengthen student engagement and improve clarity of subject matter.

Conclusion

The Department of Statistics Study Tour to Satara District was more than an educational excursion. It was an opportunity to transform statistical theory into practical understanding.

By observing data collection, sampling practices, regression applications, administrative records and visitor-volume analysis, students were able to see how Statistics contributes to real-world decision-making.

The tour reinforced a simple but powerful message:

The experience encouraged students to look at their surroundings through a statistical lens, ask meaningful questions, recognize patterns and understand how data can be transformed into knowledge.

An Innovative Activity-Based Initiative by the Department of Statistics

Introduction

Statistics is not merely a subject of numbers, formulas and calculations; it is a powerful way of thinking, interpreting information and making informed decisions. Recognizing the importance of developing statistical thinking beyond the traditional classroom, the Department of Statistics, Dattajirao Kadam Arts, Science and Commerce College, Ichalkaranji, organized “STAT-NOVA 2K26 – Think Data, Think Different” on Saturday, 24 January 2026. The event was designed to provide students with an opportunity to explore Statistics through creativity, competition, technology, games and collaborative learning.

STAT-NOVA 2K26 brought together students of B.Sc. I, II and III (Statistics) and created an engaging platform where academic knowledge could be combined with creativity, quick thinking and problem-solving. The event successfully demonstrated that statistical learning can be both intellectually stimulating and enjoyable.



The Vision Behind STAT-NOVA

The theme “Think Data – Think Different” reflects the changing role of Statistics in the modern world. In an era where data influences education, business, science, technology and everyday decision-making, students need more than theoretical knowledge. They need the ability to interpret information, recognize patterns, communicate findings and approach problems analytically.

STAT-NOVA was therefore conceptualized as a platform for developing these skills through activity-based and experiential learning.

A Celebration of Statistical Thinking

The event included four major competitions, allowing students to participate individually or in pairs:

1. PowerPoint Presentation

The PowerPoint Presentation competition provided students with an opportunity to present statistical concepts and real-world applications of data. Students demonstrated their ability to organize information, communicate ideas and present statistical topics creatively.

The activity encouraged students to move beyond memorizing concepts and develop the confidence to communicate statistical knowledge effectively.

2. Quiz – Kahoot!

The Kahoot! Quiz added a digital and energetic dimension to the event. Students participated in a competitive quiz that tested their statistical knowledge and quick thinking. The technology-enabled format created an interactive learning environment in which students could immediately engage with questions and compete in a healthy academic atmosphere.

The quiz format encouraged students to recall concepts rapidly while enjoying the excitement of a game-based learning environment.

3. Entertaining Games

One of the distinctive features of STAT-NOVA was the inclusion of entertaining games. These activities provided students with a refreshing break from conventional academic sessions while encouraging participation, interaction and team spirit.

The games demonstrated that learning environments can be both academically purposeful and enjoyable. Students had the opportunity to interact with their peers, participate actively and experience the value of cooperation and healthy competition.

4. Surprise Game

The Surprise Game introduced an element of curiosity and uncertainty. Since the challenge was not announced in advance, participants had to respond spontaneously and demonstrate adaptability and out-of-the-box thinking.

This activity highlighted an important quality of statistical thinking—the ability to respond logically when situations are unfamiliar or unexpected.

Formal Inauguration and Academic Leadership

The event was conducted under the guidance of the Department of Statistics. The programme presentation identifies Mr. S. K. Suryawanshi, Ex-Head, Department of Statistics, D.K.A.S.C. College, Ichalkaranji, as the Chief Guest and Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Khade, Principal, D.K.A.S.C. College, Ichalkaranji, as the President. Mr. Vijay Suryawanshi, Head of the Department of Statistics, was associated with the organization of the event.

The formal programme further included an introduction by Mr. V. R. Suryawanshi, a session by Prof. S. K. Suryawanshi, a presidential address by Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Khade, a vote of thanks by Mr. R. C. Sadalage, and anchoring by Mrs. K. K. Koli.

From Classroom Learning to Experiential Learning

The central strength of STAT-NOVA was its emphasis on learning by doing.

Traditional classroom teaching provides students with theoretical foundations, while activities such as presentations, digital quizzes and games provide opportunities to apply knowledge in different contexts. Through STAT-NOVA, students were encouraged to think, respond, collaborate and communicate rather than simply listen.

This approach contributes to the development of several important skills:

The event was organized for students of B.Sc. I, II and III (Statistics). The official activity record reports participation by 22 students—4 male and 18 female students, along with participation from teaching and non-teaching staff.

The participation of students from different years provided an opportunity for interaction across classes and helped strengthen the academic community within the Department of Statistics.






A Platform for Talent Beyond the Textbook

STAT-NOVA also provided students with a platform to showcase talents that may not always be visible during conventional classroom teaching.

The PowerPoint Presentation highlighted presentation and communication skills. The Kahoot! Quiz encouraged quick recall and digital participation. Entertaining games promoted interaction and team spirit, while the Surprise Game encouraged adaptability and creative thinking.

Thus, each activity addressed a different dimension of student development while maintaining a common focus on statistical thinking.

Outcome of the Event

The event successfully created a platform for students to interact, share knowledge and showcase their talents. According to the event report, STAT-NOVA helped foster a deeper interest in data while strengthening the departmental community through healthy competition.

The programme also demonstrated the educational value of integrating games, technology, presentations and challenges into the learning process. Rather than treating Statistics as a purely theoretical discipline, STAT-NOVA presented it as a subject that encourages curiosity, reasoning, creativity and informed thinking.

STAT-NOVA has therefore emerged as a meaningful activity-based initiative that connects statistical knowledge with creativity, technology, teamwork and fun.
